Pangong Lake

About Pangong Lake

Pangong Lake, also known as Pangong Tso, is one of the most famous tourist attractions in Ladakh. Located at an altitude of around 14,270 feet (4,350 meters) above sea level, this high-altitude lake is known for its crystal-clear blue waters, dramatic mountain backdrop, and peaceful surroundings.

The lake stretches approximately 134 km in length, out of which nearly 60% lies in Tibet (China), while the remaining portion is in India. Because of its location near the Indo-China border, Pangong Lake holds both geographical and strategic importance.

What makes Pangong unique is its saline (brackish) water. Despite being a saltwater lake, it freezes completely during winters when temperatures drop between –10°C to –30°C.

Due to its raw beauty, silence, and scenic setting, Pangong Lake is often described as one of the most mesmerizing landscapes in Ladakh.
